Film of the Zefirelli production at La Scala, Milan. Fairly straightforward account of the Puccini masterpiece without the firewoorks some might expect from a Zef production. Principals were all in fine voice although once or twice I felt they struggled with tempi a tad on the slow side. If you're coming to the opera for the first time you won't go far wrong with this version....have the Kleenex handy!
I've seen La Bohemme quite a few times, and visually this is just another version. So is the performance, but as the standard is usally very high, that's no bad thing. The disk production standard is very high too. It simply has nothing to set it apart from the rest.
the clarity of this recording was excellent both visually and vocally. the production and design are both first glass and the voices were exceptional. i realize that most people look to hear the voices like those of the three tenors and others who have made recordings over the past few years, but i found the tenor both sweet and strong. i would have prefered someone else singing mimi but it was more than adequate to make for an enjoyable experience all around.
