The best way to describe La Cage Aux Folles is kind of a mixture between Cabaret and Yes Minister. It's significantly more entertaining than most other trite and banal French cinematic offerings, and I actually preferred it to more recent productions such as Delicatessen and Belleville Rendezvous.
Beautifully shot and well acted comedy with a very sympathetic treatment of some of the issues that can arise in the life of a gay partnership. A lovely film that is thoroughly enjoyable and funny but which gives cause for more serious thought as well. Really recommended.
A French classic. This was yet another French film to be copied by the Americans - it became "The Bird Cage", but I prefer the original.
As a lot of people are unaware, this was originally a stage show which was later filmed, and then plagarised years later by the Americans. Its theatrical origins show with a number of occasionally long set pieces, but the acting is brilliant, with a totally over the top drama queen and his long suffering boyfriend. Yes its stereotyped, and yes its camp as hell, but this is the gay 1970's, and it has a few real howlingly funny scenes.
(Oh and dont bother with the English dub, watch the French and use the subtitles, its much better)
The original 'Birdcage' was fabulously flambouyant, however the English dubbing was pretty average...

This film is wonderful! It's every bit as entertaining and witty as the American version with Robin Williams, possibly even more so because it's French! The acting and casting are superb. It does seem quite dated in parts but does not suffer because of this. I would highly recommend this film to anyone.
I didn't realise that this movie was with subtitles only. ALL the MUSIC has been cut, it should be a great film but the good bits were lost.

This is a terrible film. After having loved le placard and diner de cons I looked around for other francis veber based films. This came highly recommended but in actuality is very dated, full of dodgy stereotypes and is just not funny!
This is much better than the later Robin Williams remake, which made the jokes too obvious.
This film is by no means subtle but is a lot more 'real' and funny in a more natural way.
Really, really funny film. If you?ve seen the Birdcage then you?ll know the story but this is better particularly because it was made in the 1970s when Hollywood would never have dreamed of doing anything so daring as making a comedy about a gay couple. The black ?maid? who uses all the language of slavery ?le p?tit maitre blanc? made me a little uncomfortable?was the character meant to be affected, acerbic or??
The ending is a bit of an anti-climax to be honest, the best part is seeing Renato and Albin interact with each other. They are superb!
