Anyone thinking this is going to be in the mould of Cosi or Don Giovanni is in for a disappointment. Few if any of the arias are well known, and are accompanied by long spells of flat recitative. The piece was apparently written as a commission to mark the coronation of the new Austro-Hungarian emperor as King of Bohemia. I couldn't get excited about it, and indeed didn't manage to get to the end.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)A superb, unexpected discovery
By a customer , 15 Jan 2012Mozart's last opera, and a superb, unexpected discovery. Beautifully acted and staged on an almost bare stage. The subtitles helped a lot, since the plot is complex and otherwise quite difficult to follow.- Was this review helpful to you?

Deserves Clemency
By CatherineAnne (53 reviews) from Harrogate, Yorkshire, England , 10 Oct 2010Glyndbourne's stage is not very big, so its scenes, per se, can not be as massive as, say, The Royal Opera House or The Met. I thought that, given the restrictions and the minimalist nature, the set was apt and handled well. Also considering the fact that Mozart wrote it in 18 days near the end of his life, it is a truly remarkable opera. The cast was good and the singing on the whole was adequate. I wouldn't say that it was one of my favourite operas, but given the restrictions it was a good production and well worth a look.- Was this review helpful to you?
