La Fille Mal gardee: Ashton's Masterpiece

This is a brilliant ballet, and, in my opinion, Frederick Ashton's best full-length ballet. Although it is essentially a 'light' ballet with minimal character development and a light romantic plot it is noted for it's excellent choreography by Ashton and evocative sets and costumes by Osbert Lancaster. Between them they transformed this very French-sounding ballet into an idyllic pastiche of the English Romantic countryside; a countryside which never existed but which many can imagine. The dancing and characterisation(especially Lesley Collier as Lise)is of a very high standard. This is a fun ballet with plenty of humour and can be enjoyed both by ballet newcomers and balletomanes.

A happy warming ballet for ALL

This is the ideal ballet for non-ballet lovers (ie my husband) as well as us fans. A lovely mix of great dancing and good humourous moments. The music (apart from the clog dance) is not well known, but that doesn't matter. We particularly loved the opening chickens, and the comic bits with the proposed suitor.

    The is THE version of

This is the best version, the newer versions lack some of the personality that the performers get into this one.

    Charming, funny and impressive.

    A work of art

The Royal Ballet's production of 'La Fille Mal Gardee' is a pure delight and near perfect. As always Frederick Ashton's choreography provides a natural and joyful interpretation. The young lady's mother (in drag) and her revolting young gentleman wooer (a tricky comedic role) are hilarious and the poultry lighthearted - they all reminded me of Ashton's Beatrix Potter film choreography. The evocative young lovers have chemistry - no stiff wooden performances. Sets and costumes were a pleasure to look at and appropriate. John Lanchbery has put his stamp on Herold's score which is beautiful and sustains energy. Quite the nicest ballet I have seen, live or on film.
