La Gazetta

The quality, unusual for an Opera DVD, is excellent. The setting, being early 20thC for an 1816 Opera, may seem incongrous to some however I enjoyed the approach. The voices of all are good and clear and the sub-titling more than sufficient and accurate. There was one occaison when the back drop and supporting characters interferred with the viewing pleasure and a particular scene at the end when the camera direction was irritating by focusing on scenery rather that the solist. This version may not have achieved wonder from the likes of Gramophone but I really enjoyed and would recommend.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)A Good Romp
By Woldsbuff (10 reviews) , 03 May 2012Rarely performed and worth watching. An interesting production which gets better. This is not a show stopper but a pleasant way to pass an evening with Rossini.- Was this review helpful to you?

A Rossini compilation of other operas
By risky (102 reviews) from Ashby de la zouch , 20 Jul 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
I already have this production on dvd so was aware of the plot. This is not one of Rossini's finest operas, and is made up mainly of arias from his better known ones. It even starts with the overture to Cinderella, so there is no shortage of brilliant orchestration. Although the scenery is a little on the sparce side, the costumes are very colourful and being set in the 1920s, there is lots of suspenders and stockings on view. Some of the cast could have been improved upon, but for the most part managed the rapid patter. Obviously blu ray improved both picture and sound, but not sufficiently for a purchase. It was played for laughs and it was amusing, but I could see the need for excusions by the cast into the audience. Rossini fans who do not know the opera will enjoy it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Joyful sexy romp!
By Snodgrass2 (4 reviews) from Port Talbot , 16 Feb 2011The staging was very bright and inventive. But even by Rossini's standards the storyline is lacking any drama, but they did their best with it. I've never seen such saucy costumes; bring it on! Opera should be fun!- Was this review helpful to you?

Lacked in the singing department
By WestCountry (68 reviews) from Yeovil , 10 Sep 2010This is production is a visual treat and I have no problem with moving it to the era of the 1920/30s.
There is plenty of good acting by the cast and excellent dancing by some very attractive ladies (Is this a Barcelona tradition?).
The comedy is the usual opera toe-curling variety but that can be forgiven. The main female singers were in fine physical form as they showed in their sometimes revealing costumes. The orchestra played well and the quality of the blu-ray was uniformly excellent.
The problem was in the singing or in the recording. The sound came across as thin and distant and, in my opinion, I did not think that the voices complimented one another.
Though this not one of Rossini's best operas, this production has some solid foundations to make a pleasurable evening out- Was this review helpful to you?
