never blink - amazing!
By juno from London , 03 Feb 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
"La Haine" is one of the best films made in the last 20 years. It requires attention to detail, though, and it's fully packed with messages and metaphors. It's not just about racism and social condition but also a representation of youth and its bigger questions. "The world is yours", seen frequently in the street banners throughout the film, contradicts the reality of what the youths expect life to offer them.
The camerawork is absolutely amazing, just try to keep an eye for how the camera moves and how the images follow each other, and how the sound is worked around them. The acting is amazing too, it leads us to believe that everyone is real, and I think it helped a lot that they didn't employ any major actors for the main parts.
There are many details to watch out for and some of them will only be understood by viewers with background knowledge on certain issues. But that's not important at all, the film is highly entertaining and punchy, as good if not better than most actions films. The violence is realistic and only shocking because it mirrors real situations.
Watch it twice, at least, and don't blink :)- Was this review helpful to you?

(162)Like Watching a Documentary but in French
By a customer , 24 Mar 2013I am a huge fan of Vincent Cassel, but this film simply can't capture my attention - may be it's black and white, less stimulation for my visual cortex; my language brain can't focus on the subtitle either; perhaps mostly due to the story slow to develop. May be i'll appreciate it another time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Black 'n White Gem
By Reel2Reel (3 reviews) , 08 Mar 2013Very gritty & dark but still a sense of (black) humour comes through. Acting & direction are first rate. Even if this is not your type of film I don't think anyone can question the quality.- Was this review helpful to you?

Gritty and atmospheric
By Shinko (25 reviews) from South Wales , 30 Nov 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
La Haine is one of those gritty urban films that are representative of the society at the time and from which they come. What could quite easilly be dubbed a French Scorses-esque film, the plot follows three people affected by Parisian riots: a Jew, an Arab and a black boxer - three different lives and cultures, but are all thrown into the urban melting pot of the French ghetto. The film explores racial and class tensions, but also knows when to lighten the mood a little - some comic moments are also thrown in to ensure La Haine does not become difficult viewing. At times quite tedius, but the sociological questions it raises and the brilliant black and white cinematography help create a very good, atmospheric study of rising twentieth century tensions.- Was this review helpful to you?

GHASTLY FILM
By a customer , 22 Nov 2012Absolutely ghastly film about hopeless people who have little chance of bettering themselves. There was no purpose for living for the three main characters and their mindless behaviour and general ignorance was intolerable.- Was this review helpful to you?

It's not the fall that kills you, this film will!!
By chikkee (3 reviews) from London , 18 Oct 2012I was really looking forward to watching this film after reading all the reviews, and was bitterly disappointed, don't get me wrong the acting was brilliant it was just the storyline that let it down completely.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me considering I hired this film because of the rave reviews, but the lack of content for me was a real shame.- Was this review helpful to you?
