never blink - amazing!
By juno from London , 03 Feb 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
"La Haine" is one of the best films made in the last 20 years. It requires attention to detail, though, and it's fully packed with messages and metaphors. It's not just about racism and social condition but also a representation of youth and its bigger questions. "The world is yours", seen frequently in the street banners throughout the film, contradicts the reality of what the youths expect life to offer them.
The camerawork is absolutely amazing, just try to keep an eye for how the camera moves and how the images follow each other, and how the sound is worked around them. The acting is amazing too, it leads us to believe that everyone is real, and I think it helped a lot that they didn't employ any major actors for the main parts.
There are many details to watch out for and some of them will only be understood by viewers with background knowledge on certain issues. But that's not important at all, the film is highly entertaining and punchy, as good if not better than most actions films. The violence is realistic and only shocking because it mirrors real situations.
Watch it twice, at least, and don't blink :)- Was this review helpful to you?

(162)Just warm, funny and light hearted.
By a customer , 12 Oct 2012Although from a younger generation (I was 8 when this movie came out) I could relate to so many scenes, in so many ways. After a bit of a tough week and in need of a bit of a hug, this movie did it for me. Five stars - in my opinion - for a number of reasons. Watch it yourself to decide! A wonderful film I know I'm going to enjoy just as much again.- Was this review helpful to you?

The 3 Musketeers of the Paris suburbs.
By insomniac (88 reviews) from Malvern , 30 Jun 2012This is a gripping film, brilliantly acted and shot, set in the violent Paris suburbs. The story revolves around the lives of three friends, and their different responses to police brutality. Although ultimately quite depressing, it is cathartic -and memorable,.- Was this review helpful to you?

How to stereotype
By armut (2 reviews) from Beverley , 17 Jun 2012So it's in black and white and about drugs poverty and violence, wow it must be good.
WRONG, it is a pale pastiche of Danny Boyle and very thin.
The title says it all and there is little in it to remember.
The fact that the French still ghettoise the disposessed is worth consideration but not in a two hour film.
You may come away believing that there are no women in the suburbs and that a gun is a rare thing in this environment so how does that make this a good film?
The fact that this film is used by many as the cultual study for the `A` level French course will not create many Francophiles.- Was this review helpful to you?

Too many kittens
By a customer , 12 May 2012Not half as good as i was led to believe, good re-creation of yobbish boy culture, but see enough of them in real life..- Was this review helpful to you?

Thought provoking
By PopcornMuncher (58 reviews) from London , 08 May 2012Not knowing much about the French suburbs didn't stop this film from doing what a few in it's genre do very well - spot light the lives of those who find themselves trapped in a cycle of crime, brutal policing & poverty.
The dire subject is lightened by an interesting story, good dialogue and very good performances from the leads Vincent Cassel, Hubert Kounde & Said Taghmaoui.
I thought this was an engaging and thought provoking film.- Was this review helpful to you?
