La Kermesse Heroique

Winner of several Best Foreign Film awards, this rollicking comedy is set in 1616 in Boom, a Belgian village, as Philip of Spain was conquering Flanders. When the mayor of the town learns that the Spaniards are about to invade, he enacts a plan to foil them. He pretends he's just died, the menfolk go into hiding and then, if they're lucky, the conquerors will move on to another town. Well, with the men away, the women of Boom will play and they cheerfully greet the soldiers like old friends and have a big party. Afterwards, the Spaniards go on their merry way. The men of Boom come out of hiding and foolishly thank themselves for saving the village.
