God but not great

French film with english subitles about Paris in 1527.
My history isn't good so maybe that was the reason I had to go back to the initial subtitles to try and get my bearings at the start of the film.
Basically it is about the effect an incestuous Catholic French Royal Family has on themselves and their subjects.
Margot(Adjani), the sister of the King is married (against her will)to her protestant cousin, to try and alleviate the Catholic's concerns, that the King is being influenced more by his Protestant mentor, than his wicked mother. Not a great idea, but it's actually part of a master plan, to start a cull of the Protestants. This has the desired effect, as a result of tension induced at the wedding.
The Catholic faith obviously had different values in those days because murder, incest, and generally sleeping around with everyone but your spouse, seems to be the order of the day.
In amongst all this murder and mayhem Margot's attitude to life changes, after she meets her soul(sex)mate (not hubbie) and rather than sleeping with all and sundry, she tries to change, and act like the potential queen that she is.
The film is then about the trials and tribulations of love and survival in an atmosphere of violence and distrust.
Oh and in the true tradition of French films there's quite a bit of naked flesh- Was this review helpful to you?

By stevieboy55 (11 reviews) , 15 Apr 2013While the look and feel of the film is first rate I couldn't help feeling I should have done an A level in the subject before attempting to view it. The interecine affairs of the 16th century French Religious wars provide a confusing backdrop to what may be a love story or a historial piece or maybe just a costume drama. Whatever it is, it is certainly confusing.- Was this review helpful to you?

Only ok
By ash53 (53 reviews) from newbury , 20 Mar 2012Splendid performance from Virna Lizi!! I think I'd wanted to see this film for so long that when it come along it took me a few minutes to understand it was just a movie. That said it was a warts and all depiction of the life and times - I think Queen Catherine and her Boys would have made a more riveting story - as lovely as Ms Adjani is she looked a bit too 'pouty' to stand up to any of them - mind you with that lot as your nearest and dearest I suppose anybody would be near to tears 24/7. I think it tried to tell too many stories from too many angles and to be honest I kept looking at the clock ( I've paid for this I'm watching it ) - shame really - some epic scenes and a wonderful massacre and a story that sort of........bobbed about- Was this review helpful to you?

Possibly the best costume drama I've ever seen
By a customer , 28 Nov 2011Not much to say except that it's excellent, convincing and terrifying. It conveys a feel for the emotions, prejudices and savageries of the time and at no time is there a sense of 20th Century actors dressed up and going through the motions. This feels like the 16th Century in all its horror. A superb movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

French historical epic
By kingjohnII (28 reviews) , 09 May 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Good story and good acting, an enjoyable film. Difficult to follow at times, particularly which members of the royal family were who. Took a while to get going. Grim period of history, but was well represented.- Was this review helpful to you?

Claude Berri a little off the boil...
By SuzannePolish (44 reviews) from South West , 22 Apr 2011Lavish, period drama, but coming to this with insufficient historical knowledge made the film, or at least the first half, somewhat difficult to follow. I do like Claude Berri's films very much, but am not convinced this is one of his best.- Was this review helpful to you?
