This is the simple story of a boy and his Nanna set in 60s blues-laden Lackawanna New York. All performances are excellent and the story is touching but, at times, too sentimental (but, hey, I like that...). Worth the price of rental to see S. Epatha Merkerson break out of her 'Law and Order' restraints and prove that she is a versatile actor.
An excellent film. A great story with good emsemble acting. It made me laugh, cry and dance! A thoroughly good watch.
This is one of the most moving films I have ever seen and it isn't that well known. Saw this for the first ever time in the US when on holiday and loved it ever since. Originally made for the channel HBO it will make you laugh and make you cry. Dont believe ever released in uk cinemas. Well worth a watch and well deserving of 5 stars

Lovely movie, heart warming. Nothing over exciting, just a nice story.

I really wanted to like this film but the pace of it was too frantic and frenetic for me to properly care about the characters. The acting was brilliant but the actors were let down by the jumpy, episodic direction.
This portrayal of African-American life in the 1950s-60s is very vivid and heart-warming.
The cinematography, production design and soundtrack are brilliant, and really draw you in.
There is a good ensemble cast, including Jimmy Smits, Mos Def, Macey Gray and the great Delroy Lindo, but so many characters, whose stories come in so briefly, that you don't have enough to hang on to.
By the end, though, you'll be shedding a tear at the lovely story of the central character, Momma.
Very interesting film highlighting the difficulties that black people faced during that time period. Good performances, interesting characters. I enjoyed it.
full of drama, thrill, and suspense and a very happy ending for a woman so devoted to doing good things & helpful to others in need.
Good actors, but a slow movie and boring storyline. I lost interest after 30 minutes...
Surprisingly good, well acted. Great film, it took me back to a time that's now lost forever.
Lovely movie, heart warming. Nothing over exciting, just a nice story.
