Where is Leonard Cohen?
By AdrianWalsh (226 reviews) from Lancaster , 30 Jun 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This On The Wall type documentary was produced in 1965, and features a 45 minute documentary on the then youthful looking Mr Cohen. It does portray Leonard as a witty, amusing man, not something you get from his records, which was the only thing I learnt or found a little bit interesting from this. I love his music but really missed the dark man here. I documentary I really wish I never saw. Entirely shot in Black and White with very very few extras. Certainly one to miss as far as I am concerned!- Was this review helpful to you?

(9)Great little documentary
By tackz (9 reviews) from London , 13 Aug 2007Not being all that familiar with Cohen, I rented it to watch with a friend whose a Cohen fan - I wasn't anticipating anything particularly good but watched with an open mind. I was pleasantly surprised, it showed Cohen as very witty, intelligent and hugely watchable, the poems striking and the film making quite inspiring. It is also filmed in that very 60s new wave sort of way and captures the time and place very well. I loved it and really didnt think i would. If at all interested in Cohen, Poetry or early 60s filmmaking, rent this film!- Was this review helpful to you?

One for the converted
By Johnson from London , 01 Apr 2007The film focuses on Cohen's poetry and lifestyle during the 1960s. It is somewhat sycophantic and carries an air of self-importance that is probably just a reflection of contemporary documentary styles. However, Dylan's 'Don't look now/back [?]' is very much superior to this. What does come through is his mastery of the language and thoughtful and very individual commentaries on various situations. Still, no music (the DVD promises bonus features including music but these didn't work for me) leads it to be somewhat unsatisfying - but hey, I guess that's what 'You-tube' is for. This won't win him any new admirers but will be of some interest to the die-hards (of which I am one).- Was this review helpful to you?
