Ladies Of Letters

For Irene (Lipman) and Vera (Reid) a tipsy under-the-table conversation at a wedding sparks a correspondence of exploits and adventures of blissful holidays, delicious recipes and grateful grandchildren. As the pensioner pen-pals keep their spirits up with sherry and shared recipes, their attempts at long-distance one-upmanship are strained by fractious families, misfiring romance and personal misfortune. In reality they are both lonely and taken for granted by their families.

Whether they are discussing the annual cricket club dance, a protest at a nuclear fuel dump or the prison ship in which they both wind up, the well-mannered, acrimony-laced missives just keep on coming. But, for all the unspoken animosity, it is clear that their correspondence is a lifeline for them and for all the unspoken animosity, they need each other.

    A Rare Gem

Its rare in these days of reallity TV for something truly unique but this cirtanly qualifys. The ten part storys is told complatly in letters between the two lead charricters, in monologs read straight to camera ocasionaly intersperced with flashback clips showing the events being discribed. This sounds like it would be boring. but the quality performences from the veteren Actresses and the witty script ensure you will be hooked from beggining to end.

    Too many letters

1st letter funny. 2nd letter quite funny.3rd letter fairly funny. 4th letter, much like the first three................. 6th letter and I`m getting bored. Watched first episode then sent the disc back and quickly took the 2nd disc off my wish list.

Not what I thought. Shouldn`t have taken notice of the reviews.
