A good film to surprise you in unexpected and amusing ways, in a typically John Malkovich style. It seems refreshingly original right from the start.
Although you are given enough clues to work out what might happen next in the plot, the way in which it happens is always a nice surprise.
If it's with John Malkovitch, you know that you're not going to get some run-of-the-mill Hollywood dross. & this is not yer usual dross...
Ladies Room is a odd film; it feels like a theatre piece adapted for cinema. Most of the action ends up being played out in ladies' washrooms, but the comedy is beautifully crafted - the dialogue is brilliant, acting superb and direction assured.
The idea - a group of women waiting in limbo for the end to come - sounds crazy, but here it becomes an opportunity to evaluate the moral and psychological mess the central characters have got themselves into. The comedy comes from the farce created in the second half (which is hilariously funny), and from the failings of the characters.
Not for the instant-adrenaline types by any means, Ladies Room rewards patience and gets to a lovely resolution at the end. And it makes you wonder why US cinema produces so little really thoughful, but funny stuff.
