One big yawn
By a customer from Edinburgh , 30 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Lady Chatterley's Lover is still seen as smutty and sexy, even though culture has left the book far behind. What was pornographic 50 years ago may even be seen before the 9pm watershed today.
In reality, the book is rather more serious than many people imagine. D H Lawrence was concerned that people treated sex as dirty, sinful or even beneath the dignity of intelligent human beings. He saw sex as potentially liberating, almost a spiritual experience.
This version of the book is dull, unconvincing and misses every point Lawrence tried to make. Lady C's relationship with the gamekeeper is just a bit of lust - understandable, since her hubby's been disabled in the war! It isn't even sexy - the sex scenes are yawningly boring.
Casting Sylvia Krystel (Emmanuelle) in the lead surely won the film many viewers when it first appeared, but it's worth a fulsome body-swerve today.

By a customer from Peterborough , 06 Mar 2010Straightforward telling of the D H Lawrence tale. Mildly erotic, acted well enough and watchable. Nothing to get over excited about though.- Was this review helpful to you?
