Kindly caretaker Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti, SIDEWAYS) discovers an elfin creature named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard, THE VILLAGE) living in the swimming pool of the apartment complex where he works. It soon becomes apparent to Cleveland that Story is not of this world, and that her mission to deliver a message to mankind is fraught with danger. The stuttering caretaker tries valiantly to protect her so that she may have safe passage back to the Blue World from whence she came. Suspension of disbelief is mandatory in this beautifully realised modern day fable, directed by master of suspense M. Night Shyamalan, who puts his own unique spin on the conventions of the traditional fairy tale.

One of Shyamalan's admirable traits is that he never just homages earlier work, but always thoroughly overhauls his sources. There are traces in LADY IN THE WATER of TWILIGHT ZONE writer Rod Serling's tales...
[T]hanks to superb performances, it's pretty engrossing. Howard draws you right in, there's no way not to empathize with Giamatti...
No plot, no decent actors, no nothing, what a waste of a sunday afternoon. I wish we had thrown this dvd in the water....
Lady In The Water was not at all what I expected, I had not read the previews only seen a brief trailer and after my initial fears that this movie might just be too slow to really enjoy I ended the movie quite satisfied. Its hard to describe exactly what type of film this is, my wife and I debated this for a while and it is perhaps easier to describe what genre this film is not, it is not your traditional quick paced sci-fi fantasy, it is certainly not a horror and as far as a thriller goes it is a slower moving thought provoking fantasy thriller as apposed to action style thriller. The story surrounds a caretaker of a block of apartments that surround a swimming pool from which a mysterious visitor emerges. The story is a cluedo style thriller as the caretaker played well enough by Paul Giamatti unravels the mysterious guests message and attempts to return her safely to the Blue world. The story is deliberately unlikely; it is very much a style of unique fantasy movie, many may find a little slow moving, especially in the fist hour however the story builds nicely and just when I thought I had sussed the movie and label the later stages predictable the perceived obvious answers were disproved making for a highly entertaining ending. I like this film and so long as you are not expecting high paced action or slasher horror I think most will also enjoy, my wife loved this movie and almost gave a 5 star rating but I can not see past 4. Worth a watch, 7/10 and 4 Stars.
When it emerged last week that Layer Cake star Daniel Craig would share a gay kiss in his latest film, Infamous, many Bond fans were said to be shocked. So the news that Bond 22, the follow up to Casino Royale, Craig's first Bond film, will see the secret agent with a new love interest is sure to cement the actor's machismo for 007 homosceptics. Or is it? As film insiders have revealed that Bond, being a noughties man and all, will have a male love interest in the next instalment of the... Read more
