    [Highly rated reviewer]

I love Shostakovich's instrumental music, but realised once again that I do not like most opera. When the large heroine began to sing stridently and lengthily, lying on a stage bed, I thought that this was not to my taste and pressed the open/close button.

My 1 star rating is not Philistine, only my personal reaction.

This is the heavy metal end of opera and contains some amazing dissonances. I'm not sure what possessed Shostakovich to write it but with several rapes and murders it is not surprising that it incurred Stalin's displeasure. An article in Pravda nearly resulted in Shostakovich's permanent appointment as composer to the Siberian salt mine band. The musical idom is that of his fourth symphony. It is well performed and directed. It is far from Shostakovich's most profound offering but if you like his choral music such the 'Execution of Stephan Razin' or the thirteenth symphony then you should try it. If you are expecting 'The Magic Flute' or even Wagner then give it a miss!
