Absolutely absurd and fantastic, this is a cult classic. Vulgar humour juxtaposed against 'horror', and with an all-star cast!

A camp horror classic. You either get it or you don't. The pompous bores from Time Out and Halliwell's certainly don't, but if you do, then it's a riotously funny and engaging film, in the same sort of category as Romero's 'Dusk Till Dawn' but done in a very British Hammer-horror style, and frankly much funnier. Amanda Donohoe's Lady Sylvia is a brilliantly noirish and sexy femme fatale to set against Peter Capaldi's bumbling archaeologist and Hugh Grant's ... erm ... Hugh Grant. If you want to, you can see it as parody, or a satire on religion. But look, it's a British horror flick; it's not meant to be taken seriously. Those of a pious disposition or without a sense of humour should avoid it; the rest of us can enjoy.

  • Quirky, fun and entertaining.

Some bad acting in this film, particularly from Catherine Oxenhope, who struggles with the Yorkshire accent. But it is lots of fun particularly for Hammer horror fans. Ken Russell's usual sexy, eccentric, creepy style.
