Land Of Plenty

Wim Wenders's emotional LAND OF PLENTY is a powerful exploration of post-9/11 America. John Diehl gives a strong performance as Paul, a Vietnam Vet who is haunted by the events of September 11 and drives the streets of Los Angeles searching for terrorists he is sure are going to strike again. DAWSON CREEK's Michelle Williams, in a breakout role, plays Paul's niece, Lana, who has been living in Israel and has come to California to work at a homeless mission. Each is firmly dedicated to what they see is their job of making America better--and safer--even though they come from two very different worlds.

When a homeless Muslim is gunned down, Paul and Lana team up on a road trip; while Lana wants to deliver the body to the dead man's family, Paul wants to find the terrorist cell he believes the man was working for. Their cross-country journey reveals several sides of America and its multitude of reactions to the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center.

  • [Wender's] view of American landscapes and folkways...is often romantic and always affectionate, perhaps never more so than in LAND OF PLENTY

    Don't believe the detractors.

I'm not sure why there are so many reviews knocking this film. Although it's safe to say it isn't going to make anyone's list of all time masterpieces, dedicating a couple of hours of your life to this movie is far from a waste of time. Those who have seen Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas will be familiar with Wender's quiet and contemplative style and he uses it here to great effect. Obviously working to a tight budget and shooting on digital film stock this is no glossy effects laden Hollywood behemoth , but it is the first example of mainstream media I have seen that manages to put aside all the subjective over-emotional hyperbole that habitually pervades this subject in film and TV and attempts to offer an interesting and oft overlooked analysis of the post 9/11 American mindset. This is a character driven work and those seeking big budget action and swift plot advancement should look elsewhere. I have to agree with the previous reviewer who noted Wender's occasional dalliance with cliche along the way, but those willing to give this film's quirky, well acted characters time to evolve will be rewarded with an enjoyable, thought provoking and unique investigation into the contemporary American psyche.

    Land of Plenty

Please don't bother with this tiresome, dreary non-tale. What happened to Wim Wenders??

Michelle Williams is a good actress and she tried her best but everything else about it was truly dire.
