I'm not sure why there are so many reviews knocking this film. Although it's safe to say it isn't going to make anyone's list of all time masterpieces, dedicating a couple of hours of your life to this movie is far from a waste of time. Those who have seen Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas will be familiar with Wender's quiet and contemplative style and he uses it here to great effect. Obviously working to a tight budget and shooting on digital film stock this is no glossy effects laden Hollywood behemoth , but it is the first example of mainstream media I have seen that manages to put aside all the subjective over-emotional hyperbole that habitually pervades this subject in film and TV and attempts to offer an interesting and oft overlooked analysis of the post 9/11 American mindset. This is a character driven work and those seeking big budget action and swift plot advancement should look elsewhere. I have to agree with the previous reviewer who noted Wender's occasional dalliance with cliche along the way, but those willing to give this film's quirky, well acted characters time to evolve will be rewarded with an enjoyable, thought provoking and unique investigation into the contemporary American psyche.

  • Wim Wenders' unique take on 9/11

    Rated - 3.5 stars

Rather than a generalised view of how Americans responded (& are responding) to the trauma of 9/11, this is more a case-study of two untypical individuals - an almost laughably paranoid Vietnam vet & his saintly, charitable niece. Therefore, it‘s hard to draw any lessons about wider US society. Nevertheless, the situations Wenders places his characters in are original & intriguing; and on the whole the film holds our attention & is well worth watching. Even when not in their best form, individualist film mkers like Wim Wenders deserve our support.

  • Good Performance

The story is slight and rather fractured and although the un hinged uncle is believable I just didn't sympathise with him at all. The stand out suprise was Michelle Williams; slipped under my radar even though I saw Brokeback Mountain where Anne Hatherway sole the show for me. Williams had a real stillness/newborness to her charcater, i.e not naieve/innocent but spiritually at ease with herself. I'll be keeping an eye on future performances.

I knew nothing about this film when I rented it and was pleasantly surprised. It's a slow moving, low budget production that doesn't boast big stars but it is surprisingly compelling.

The interplay between the John Diehl and Michelle Williams characters is a joy to watch.

  • flawed but worth watching

This film is about America today, or at least one view of it. The main characters are a damaged Vietnam vet (for whom the 9/11 attack has re-kindled a purpose in life - to search out and expose terrorist cells in America) and his neice who has lived abroad all her life most recently in Israel. She comes to work in a LA mission for the homeless and to find her uncle. The film shows the dark side of America: poverty, violence and paranoia. It has a long winding build-up (typically Wenders) so is not for anyone who likes exciting action movies. The cast give excellent performances and there is a clear message at the end. For me it was flawed by being rather cliched at times and by the intrusive background music.
