Excellent Miyazaki animation
By Hungry Joe from Classified , 25 Mar 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
You could be forgiven for thinking this film is squarely aimed at children. You could not be more wrong. As with all his work, Miyazaki delivers a film that appeals to both adults and children alike. Taking it's inspiration from the tale of the island of Luputa in Gulliver's Travels, this is a throughly entertaining and exciting adventure. Superbly animated and brimming with imagination it's better than a thousand Treasure Planets
Best viewed with it's original Japanese dialogue (although the DVD contains the dreaded dubtitles i.e. the subtitles translate the English dub, which has pointless added dialogue, not the Japanese soundtrack)- Was this review helpful to you?

(84)Cool but weird
By Tvilaca (2 reviews) , 26 Jul 2012True to his style in previous animes from the director, this one maintains the same surreal storytelling of films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, with the same pleasant lightness and beauty -- cool but weird -- as defined by my 9-year-old daughter. Very watchable for children and grownups alike.- Was this review helpful to you?

Beautiful but let down by poor English voice acting
By a customer , 23 Feb 2012I really enjoyed this film, it is the fourth Studio Ghibli movie that I have watch - the others being Sprited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke. It definitely lived up to my expectations, and delivered the same wonderful quality animation, imagination and humour that I have come to expect.
The plot was entertaining and quite sweet, and the characters engaging. The pirates in particular provide some real humour! As as you come to expect from Studio Ghibli, it does also provoke some real emotion.
The only thing that let this film down was the voice acting, this being the English version. The two main characters were voiced by Anna Paquin (Sheeta) and James Van Der Beek (Pazu). Put simply it was bad, so bad that it distracted me quite significantly. Paquin's accent kept bizarrely slipping between American, Australian and English in places; and Van Der Beek just sounded to old for what I imagine to be the age of Pazu. Both were wooden, and lacked real depth or emotion. Bad voice acting is something that really bothers me, but my brother and sister who watched it with my also agreed that it was annoying! This was a real shame, otherwise we all loved Laputa! (FYI: I'm 23, Brother is 21 and Sister is 13, so it definitely appeals to a range of ages)
I think that I will try to get hold of the original in Japanese and watch with subtitles for my next watch!- Was this review helpful to you?

You won't find a clichie storyline here
By SpaceChannel5 (3 reviews) from Rotherham , 07 Dec 2011When I first saw the title of this I thought 'Jack and the beanstalk' it's honestly nothing like it.
The story is highly imaginative and the whole thing is told in a very touching sort of way. You can tell whoever made this cared about what they were doing. I don't want to go into the storyline as it might ruin it for you.
The animation is top quality and the environment within the film are often very beautiful and again imaginative. For the most part the movie is bright and colourful. Defiantly a feel good movie. Something to relax to.
For the first 5-10 mins of the movie I thought 'this is going to be rubbish' if you think the same then hang in there it's worth it. I'm not really sure why i thought it wasn't going to appeal to me but when I made my mum watch she thought the same and like me ended up loving it.
A highly recommended film and a nice break from typical western style children's movies. Although I will hasten to add that this very much a movie for all ages.- Was this review helpful to you?

a massive bore
By lsmith (14 reviews) , 12 Nov 2011I remember this film from when i was a child, and thought i would give it a watch with my own children. However i was very disappointed, this film was boring and slow to start with really bad graphics and animation. The kids lost interest fairly quickly and it didnt make it to the end,not worth the effort of renting it.- Was this review helpful to you?

fantastic Japanese animation
By a customer , 05 Aug 2011This a wonderful movie. My children love watching Japanese animation. The stories are often fantastical, full of mystery and magic but innocent without all the special effects of a big US blockbuster. There is something very captivating and beautiful about all Miyazaki movies and this is one of the best.- Was this review helpful to you?
