Lascaux - brought to life
By a customer from Northamptonshire, England , 01 Dec 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Whether you are in to early history or art, this is a brilliant documentary. The film brings the paintings to life in a way that pictures in a book cannot. Highly recommended but only if you are interested in this sort of thing.- Was this review helpful to you?

A whole new dimension
By a customer from South West England , 02 Jun 2006I've read about Lascaux, but it clearly hadn't given me the right impression about the caves - this programme makes you realise how important the 3D nature of the paintings is. I thought the voiceover got a bit repetitive towards the end when they were debating 'meanings' but otherwise I would heartily recommend this. The images capture something of the animals - it's pretty inspirational (regardless of whatever intentions the artists may have had).- Was this review helpful to you?

an amazing window inwards to our past
By a customer from South-east UK , 06 May 2006As a mural painter, I am amazed how this documentary about the cave paintings of Lascaux shows that the oldest profession in the world is mine, (how could it be prostitution if no money existed?), and some possible motives are offered: ritual, celebration of tribal unity, hallucinations, etc. For any mural painter, to know that one's materials haven't fundamentally changed in 18,000 years is extraordinary-for anyone who wants a fantasy-free vision of prehistoric life this is a must-otherwise see Ursula Andress being pulled by the hair in an insult to all our ancestors...- Was this review helpful to you?

great introduction to cave art
By a customer from Worthing, England , 01 Apr 2006Such a relief to view a no-nonsense documentary without annoying 'clever' camera tricks or special effects (ignoring one short but distracting sound track). This superlative collection of cave paintings doesn't need them to show how amazing and beautifully mystifying it is. The commentary isn't dumbed-down, but also isn't over-academic considering all the possibilities as the jury's still out on what it all means. This is about as close as you'll get to a vicarious visit to Lascaux.- Was this review helpful to you?
