Synopsis - LE is about a pilot and his navigator who are essentially delivery monkeys. They get lumbered with 'package' in the form of a littel girl who is highly sought after by a powerful and advanced enemy. This will sound familiar to fans of anime cos she possesses some secret that the bad guys desperately want to get their hands on..... chasing, explosions and desperate sitations follow. The animation is crisp and the character design is nicely done (cf. Range Murata) The characters are not particularly surprising if you are familiar with one or two adventure series' you have the super cool mysterious benefactor, vulnerable sidekick, wimpy but plucky heroe and the afore said mysterious little girl.
Thankfully there are no mecha... for a change.
If you like arial battles, huge lumbering battle ships, likeable characters and beatiful animation give it a try.
Having recently watched Fist of the North Star Vol I, my enthusiasm for this genre had taken a bit of a pounding, but watching these first four episodes of Last Exile restored it in its entirety, and I cant wait for the next four to be released.
This is a fully realised Steam Sci-Fi world, with a powerful plot that is mature and only occasionally self-indulgent. All of the traditional manga standbys are here, in particular the sullen, enigmatic antihero with long dark hair who may turn out to be friend or foe, and theres an excellent high speed race which outstrips the Tatooine sequence in SW 1.
My only reservation is that the DVD doesnt contain an option to run the four episodes back to back without titles, as it gets a bit frustrating having to skip through them.
