Universal assigned their star horror movie director James Whale and a first-rate cast, headed by Robert Young, Constance Cummings and Edward Arnold, to this offbeat comedy thriller, in which a group of socialites wake up with hangovers after a party, to find that one of their number was murdered during their carousals. A witty, sophisticated and suspenseful puzzler, the film combines, and cleverly parodies, a number of styles and genres to fascinating (if occasionally confusing) effect. Modern audiences might well appreciate the joke rather more than those of 1935 did.
Genial comedy of the death of the world, which ends not with an apocalypse but a few hapless, genteel gestures of regret.

the end of the world is on its way. everyone knows it too. i loved this film when i watched it. the beauty of the scripting. it makes a potentially bad disaster film really good, as the disaster isn't featured. instead the script follows various groups and individuals around for the last few hours of life. its sometimes brutal and sometimes humble and sad. such a good film. i recommend this film to anayone whos into foreign and arthouse, also disaster and drama films. its great
I saw this film when it was first released and have never been able to see it since. Praise the god's for the gift of dvd.
This is a low budget movie with a fantastic cast (including the fantastic Sandra Oh). The world is about to end. We don't know why. We don't know how. But everyone has accepted the fact and is preparing for the end, each in their own, unique way. Our hero wants to meet oblivion alone, in peaceful serenity but his simple plans are constantly foiled by intrusions from both friends and desperate strangers. I have particular sympathy for the poor girl left to man the phone at the utility company. Proper service right to the end! A great little film.
one of the best films I have ever seen
