A sweepingly romantic story.
Grandly romantic.
The only thing that lets this otherwise excellent film down is the American fondness for treacly sentimentality, here focused on the Jacqueline Bisset character who, both in terms of plot and (alas) acting, could easily have been left out of the whole story. The inevitable songwriting roommate is also a little too 'Friends' for what is in most ways a serious film.
Having said that, it's a film that's actually worth watching more than once, and that speaks for itself. It's not, as you may fear, a simple or simplistic story of the coming-out of a repressed gay man; rather, the narrative is concerned with the value of sex and, from the point of view of the Mormon family, tolerance - or the lack of it.
And both lead actors are unusually well-cast, wholly convincing in their parts and that in itself makes the film worth seeing.
Just brilliant ! beautifully written
