The greatest comedy duo of all time in one of their best films
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 04 Nov 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
When I think that this film is nearly 80 years old and lasts for just about 1 hour ( one of the dynamic duos longer works ! ), I am amazed at how it has lasted in providing new generations so much fun, laughter and simple pleasure.
But I should not really be too surprised, I suppose. Ollie and Stan are arguably the best comedy duo of all time ( no offence to Eric and Ernie) , and they seem to have a timeless quality in all the works they produced.
Laughter IS timeless.......
This short movie is one of their very best.
It is pretty staggering how much of a storyline and locations and characters are fitted into the 1 hour------in fact it is quite a striking aspect of the film.
And we get to see Ollie and Stan's screen wives......quite a treat. Also an appearance from one of the Silent Screen's great under-rated comedians, Charley Chase.
It is no coincidence that this comedy duo are represented in my avatar.......they are legends who have endured, and always will.
Make sure to wait for the last 10 minutes of this film, even if you didn't like it up until then..............I vouch 9 out of 10 viewers will laugh out loud during the final scenes.
AND you'll get to learn all about 'ship-hiking' and how to arrive home from a ( supposed) disastrous sea voyage BEFORE the rescue boats bring back any of the survivors LOL.
Yes, it's old; yes, we've all seen it before; yes, it's only a short tribute to the early days of 'talkies'.......but it is what the world needs.........FUN !
I often think that in the great 5 Star film , 'Sullivans Travels', it should have been a Laurel & Hardy movie that the convicts saw during the moving scene in that film, instead of the admittedly excellent Disney classic comedy.
Highly recommended if you want to laugh or see great screen entertainment that is eternal.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not their best work
By Ememqut (1 review) , 03 Jan 2012I remember loving several Laurel and Hardy films I watched on re-run TV on Sunday afternoons. I hadn't heard of this one, and now I know why. It's not so great. One short has a 2-second cameo shot of L&H and nothing more. The disc doesn't suck, but I would try a different one.- Was this review helpful to you?

One of the best of the longer films
By DeathOfNarrativeCinema (156 reviews) from Wallingford , 07 Dec 2010Maybe it's because I got to love L&H when BBC used to put on a two-reeler before the teatime news, but personally, I like the shorts best. I'm sure L&H if they were starting out now would be TV, not film stars, and a slot-friendly 20 minutes is perfect to get a dose and look forward to the next.
In contrast some of the longer films have too much padding. Even Way Out West has some longueurs. Sons of the Desert, though, is as pacy as the shorts and full of genuine laughs. The business with the front doors, the telephone call home... even the songs are good!
The reason I'm only giving this DVD four stars is that the supporting material is less inspiring. L&H (again, in my view) rarely hit the heights with their silent material, and the two offerings here are watchable but not great.
The Chevy Chase filler is just awful.- Was this review helpful to you?

laurel and hardy -sons of the desert
By a customer from birmingham , 17 Aug 2010what can i say! its Laurel & Hardy!
ok, so of course it will be dated in its style and the societal views -but its of its time...
however the slapstick comedy moments never date; one of the extra reels where there is a particular tete-a tete between laurel and a lady is quite an hilarious scene.
it was a pleasure to laugh and nearly cry to such innocent fun...
must check out some more soon!
-enjoy.- Was this review helpful to you?
