The greatest comedy duo of all time in one of their best filmsBy roncoach (370 reviews) from suffolk , 04 Nov 2011
[Highly rated reviewer]When I think that this film is nearly 80 years old and lasts for just about 1 hour ( one of the dynamic duos longer works ! ), I am amazed at how it has lasted in providing new generations so much fun, laughter and simple pleasure.
But I should not really be too surprised, I suppose. Ollie and Stan are arguably the best comedy duo of all time ( no offence to Eric and Ernie) , and they seem to have a timeless quality in all the works they produced.
Laughter IS timeless.......
This short movie is one of their very best.
It is pretty staggering how much of a storyline and locations and characters are fitted into the 1 hour------in fact it is quite a striking aspect of the film.
And we get to see Ollie and Stan's screen wives......quite a treat. Also an appearance from one of the Silent Screen's great under-rated comedians, Charley Chase.
It is no coincidence that this comedy duo are represented in my avatar.......they are legends who have endured, and always will.
Make sure to wait for the last 10 minutes of this film, even if you didn't like it up until then..............I vouch 9 out of 10 viewers will laugh out loud during the final scenes.
AND you'll get to learn all about 'ship-hiking' and how to arrive home from a ( supposed) disastrous sea voyage BEFORE the rescue boats bring back any of the survivors LOL.
Yes, it's old; yes, we've all seen it before; yes, it's only a short tribute to the early days of 'talkies'.......but it is what the world needs.........FUN !
I often think that in the great 5 Star film , 'Sullivans Travels', it should have been a Laurel & Hardy movie that the convicts saw during the moving scene in that film, instead of the admittedly excellent Disney classic comedy.
Highly recommended if you want to laugh or see great screen entertainment that is eternal.

Near Comedy PerfectionBy jyashin (1 review) from Shetland , 20 Oct 2008Sons of the Desert is not only one of L&H's best films but one of the best comedies of all time. Never before has a man eating an apple been so funny. Whilst it lacks the musical features that made Way out West a classic I think it has more laugh out loud comedy moments. The only thing stopping me from giving this 5 stars is the poor DVD features, did anyone actually ask for colour versions, and the shorts, which follow the cheating theme of the feature, are not their best and one is actually a Charlie Chase film with L&H only playing bit parts.
OutstandingBy a customer from Cowes , 24 Jul 2008If you only watch one L&H DVD - make it thins one as the first short film is classic, funny, and everlasting in it's playful approach to married life. Great stuff.
Superb ClassicBy a customer from Croydon , 02 Apr 2008Hugely enjoyable short. Highly recommended.
'Laurel And Hardy - Sons Of The DesertBy K99 (1 review) from Cheltenham , 22 Mar 2008It's been a long time since I've seen Laurel and Hardy on screen. I chose to watch the colour version of Sons of the Desert, which made it seem a bit odd as I've only seen them in black and white. It was great to have them back! The pace seemed a bit slow at times - I put this down to the length of the film. Nevertheless it did make me laugh out loud a few times, and the ending was hilarious. Worth watching.
The Best of AllBy jdd (1 review) from London , 05 Mar 2008It's almost perfect as a piece of comedy. Beautifully crafted and executed. The way they do every single thing is just so funny! Ollie is very delicate with his hands and also quite a good singer. The plot is ridiculous; the idea of the two trying to out fox their wives and sneaking of to the 'Son's of the Desert' convention is wonderful. Its a joy from start to finish and the wives and funny too. You can tell it's all Ollie's fault but he blames Stanley for everything.
