Sabine decides she has had enough of affaires with married men who neglet her for their spouses and kids - 'quelle surprise'. She decides to get married and then sets about trying to achieve her goal, even although her friends and her mother (even) suggest that she is approaching this the wrong way round. Much better to find a single man that she is attracted to, discover in the usual ways if they are compatible, perhaps even live together. If they are meant for each other; well, marriage will no doubt be an option.

That is the problem with this movie. Even with Beatrice Romand's impressive performance (try to catch her as a teenager in 'Claire's Knee') Sabine's approach is just too dumb and becomes rather irritating after a while. I won't give the ending away, but you can hazard a guess then check it out.

Yes, the film is still worth watching and for comparing with Rohmer's other films in his 'comedies and proverbs' series. For me 'The Green Ray' is the best and merits 5 stars (it also features a worthwhile supporting role for the lovely Ms Romand). We're a bit behind that standard here. Still a fascinating look for followers of French film in general and the talented Eric Rohmer in particular.

  • Pretty tedious

I know that Rohmer films will involve a lot of dialogue, most of which is unrealistically extended and complex, but, usually engaging. However, in this film the conversations became tedious, not least because the 'heroine' Sabine is such an unattractive, petulant and conceited character. It was unconvincing that she would have her pick of men wanting to marry her.

  • Very French ...

Fairly typical Eric Rohmer film. Sabine takes an extreme decision to marry an ambitious lawyer without taking the trouble to check with him first. There are a lot of staged discussions about the meaning of love and marriage and a delightfully arch ending which gives the lie to the plot. If you like Eric Rohmer you will like this. One of the treats of these films is the insights in to French life, in this case Paris and Le Mans. We used to own Renault 5 as a family car. Now I know what it was deigned for.

  • A typically exquisite piece of Rohmer

Illustrating La Fontaine's idea that, at some point in time, we all like to build castles in the air, Rohmer here gives us a young art student who decides she's fed up being the eternal mistress, and that it's time to get married.

Unfortunately, she doesn't see the difference between the two roles, thinking that becoming someone's wife will allow her the financial and emotional freedom to continue swanning about between the streets of Paris and Le Mans old town. She wants to be a lady of leisure.

As so often with this writer-director, it's the gap between the character's self-awareness and our own perspective that makes the film so entertaining. Her ability to pick exactly the wrong man and to alienate almost everyone else around her becomes almost exquisitely embarrassing after a while, yet Rohmer's control - and Beatrice Romand's brilliance in the main part - keep the film going very successfully.
