Le Jour Se Leve - translates into English as Daybreak. The film was made back in 1938 but still seems extremely fresh and modern to this viewer. A man is holed up in his room after having murdered a man. Of course the police intervene. What will happen next? It is such a simple story yet it is filmed in such a way that we live with this man and care about his fate. Filmic techniques are ingenious with clever use of fades to signify time and - for the time - a highly mobile camera. There is excellent use of sound and music also. Of course being a French film there is a fair share of melodrama and romance, but at the heart this is a tense thriller. It was actually remade in the 40's in Hollywood, but the original is the version to see.
Claustrophobic classic of French cinema with fine performance from Gabin. Just re-released in dvd.
