Gerard Depardieu plays Joachim, the Jesuit doctor who attempts to treat her, and has an awful violent secret of his own to come to terms with. But he channels this into his concern for Sarah, which turns to obsession as he travels half way around the world in search of her sister Gaelle, rejecting his faith, looking for the terrible truth.
