Too stagey
By crispin40 (553 reviews) from Stirling, Scotland , 22 Mar 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I ordered this because the cast is superb. However, after the first 10 minutes, we decided that we didn't want to watch any more of it.
Its a stage play filmed as if we were in the audience - and is of the Sartre/existentialist stylised kind of play.
Sorry - maybe someone else will be able to enjoy it but it seemed too dark and verbal without action for us at the moment.- Was this review helpful to you?

(8)Le Paltouquet
By gallelly (2 reviews) from Glasgow , 22 Nov 2010I have to say I agree with the majority of the other reviewers re this film-like them,I ordered it for the excellent Fanny Ardent-but was let down immensely-had to turn it off after 30 minutes! I thought it would have been similar in style to 'Dogville' which I enjoyed-but this was pretentious and annoying-a waste of a rental-not Fanny's finest hour!- Was this review helpful to you?

Slept through at least half of it
By a customer from London , 16 Jul 2008How I wish I'd read the reviews before putting this on my list. Everything the others have said is true. I chose this because I love Fanny Ardant but in this I didn't even like her, they managed to make her look like a tranny. Strange and different but not in an interesting way.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not quite a paltoquet
By zorilla (221 reviews) from Kew, Richmond , 02 Jun 2008The closest english translation of 'Le Paltouquet' is 'The Non-entity' which is a reference to one of the characters in this intriguing extrapolation of a French stage play. At first it does appear to be too stagey, but about half an hour into the film, the story expands out into an intriguing deconstruction of a standard 'whodunit', but instead of an Agatha Christie like detective wandering in saying something like, 'The butler did it with a candlestick in the library' what we actually get is the wonderful Fanny Ardant in a variety of extremely erotic lingerie
Even if you're not a fan of deconstructionist theatre, there's still plenty to please the eye.- Was this review helpful to you?

Surealiste
By a customer from England , 29 Jan 2007Almost a 'huit-clos', excellent dialogues well served by neat filming and precise lighting.
No doubt about its artistic dimension.- Was this review helpful to you?

Weird film
By a customer from OXON , 21 Nov 2006Did not hold our attention at all, and half way through we gave up. What little there is of action takes place on a huge stage. Shame, as they were all excellent actors, which is why I chose the film. Never mind.- Was this review helpful to you?
