The good ol' days
By a customer from Birmingham , 05 Oct 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Wonderfully shot black and white film in a very limited space (mainly inside a prison cell). Prison warders and prisoners were just too polite for it to be believable = but otherwise fairly entertaining especially when they start exploring the escape tunnels under their cell - I did fast forward some of the digging scenes!!- Was this review helpful to you?

(13)true-life jail escape drama with a twist
By MikeLaughton (112 reviews) from Oakham,England , 26 Mar 2012French prison drama made in the early 1960s but set in 1947.
Le Trou means The Hole and the story revolves around the hole five prisoners dig from their cell to the sewers to make their escape.
All five are facing long sentences or a date with Madame Guillotine so there is some urgency to their task.
The director, who died before the completed film was released, does a brilliant job but some of his scenes involving details of the escape are over-fussy and a bit long-winded. For example, a good ten minutes are spent lingering on the concrete floor of the cell as the prisoners smash their way through and we are shown every hammer blow.
The film could have been a good 20 minutes shorter and would have been better for it.
However, it is still better than most modern-day prison dramas and is well worth a look.
Based on a true story the film has a strong twist in its tail.- Was this review helpful to you?

Think 12 Angry Men, but make it 5 Hopeful Prisoners
By a customer from Hertfordshire , 26 Mar 2012It just keeps you watching. The tension isn't high; the action is slower (and more real) than we're used to seeing; the locations are the smallest you'll come across.
But the characters are excellent, with great dialogue and an ending it would be unfair to spoil but it's worth the wait.- Was this review helpful to you?

Simple story is hugely satisfying
By DeathOfNarrativeCinema (156 reviews) from Wallingford , 13 Mar 2012Possibly the best non-WW2 prison escape film ever made, and I felt it was an object lesson in how to build tension without ever resorting to histrionics, special effects or hype. Two hours and ten minutes flew past.- Was this review helpful to you?

Engrossing plot, interesting characters and setting.
By a customer , 02 Oct 2011Engrossing, especially as it is based on a true story, and one of the actors actually took part in the real jailbreak. However, not entirely realistic as my hubby says that digging with bare hands would soon make your hands bleed and you would be unable to continue.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic French 50s cinema
By a customer from OXON , 15 Feb 2011Classic French cinema of the period. Atmospheric, quick paced, tense... It's all here. Well worth a look.- Was this review helpful to you?
