A month in the life of a lonely woman living alone in an apartment in a large city, which she leaves only to buy groceries or to find company. It is a great performance by the actress Monica del Carmen and to discuss the plot is not just to risk spoiling your enjoyment but perhaps misses the point. The main character is shaped, of course, by her history, wishes and desires. She also tries to control her fate, and it is that interplay which constitutes the story.

If you are feeling lonely, vulnerable and depressed this may not be the right time to view this film, though I do not want to imply that this is not a film to enjoy. It fully deserved its Cannes accolade. Film should be like this, confronting life's realities and yet acknowledging that our individual responses to it will differ and sometimes disturb.

Since this film is not well known and may be confused with others including a 2010 American fim with the same name in English, I should explain that this review relates to the Mexican film Año bisiesto (Leap Year). It is in Spanish and is not a thriller as normally understood but intelligent drama.

  • Loneliness at leap year

This is an extremely clever film which draws you into the world of a home based journalist whose emotional world is based on fantasy & longing. This actress portrays the mundanity of a lonely life so well, her demonstration of the inadequacy of her character to deal with sadness is brilliantly observed. Some of the scenes between Laura & Arturo feel very difficult to watch, & as they become increasingly destructive you almost find yourself wanting to rescue her and saying, no, don't do that to yourself, it's not ok... Brilliant but somewhat uncomfortable viewing, showcasing desire to be loved at its most complicated & raw.

Empathy, Sadness, Outrage, Understanding, Anxiety, Frustration and finally Uneasy! Not many movies can give you all those feelings especially ones with such a small cast and mostly filmed in a small flat! I watched this film from start to finish without blinking because I didn't wanna miss anything... Totally absorbing and very moving!

  • Disturbing and left me wondering still

The stars are for the acting which was amazing. However I was still not sure why she wanted to die and to submit herself to it all. Was is her father who abused her at 12? Did she think it would have been the ultimate sacrificise? We were left wondering. Very disturbing film I found it.

Leap Year ... 2010 Perhaps Freud was right; our sexuality is governed by our childhood and our early experiences. The development of her as victim and being abused was difficult to watch - I don't think I could've watched another sexual scene. She was alternatively the child with Arturo and the mother with her younger brother. I also found a dichotomy with her professional life and her background and the way she lived her life. I think the father had a large part to play in this and think the writer is leading us to assume he abused her when she was younger ... then died before there was any settlement .... hence the 28th February and her date with death.

Several reviews have hit the nail on the head - this is an intimate character study of a single woman in the claustrophobic confines of her Mexico City apartment' The film slowly paints a picture of a believable and tragic character while keeping us in suspense about the date 29th February that is circled on her calendar. Any further description would give the film away. I would suggest watching it - it deserves the award it has received.
