    Leatherheads

    • 07 Apr 2008

American football is rarely a major selling point for a movie over here - even in the US it doesn't have a very strong box office record. An American football film set in 1925 is even less sexy, but Universal hasn't done itself any favours by holding George Clooney's latest back from the critics. Such timidity only gives the impression Leatherheads isn't much cop. Leatherheads isn't much cop, but it's not the outright disaster the studio seems to have written off. Like too many latterday... That means lay-offs, union unpleasantness and at least a couple of long months in... Read more

    • 07 Apr 2008

Casino scam movie 21 has held off a charge from George Clooney's latest outing Leatherheads to hold on the top spot at the US box office, according to new figures from Nielsen. The film, which stars Jim Sturgess and Kevin Spacey, took $15.1 million (£7.59 million) in its second week to stay ahead of Clooney's 1920s-set American Football comedy. Nim's Island, featuring Panic Room and Bugsy Malone star Jodie Foster, made its debut at number three in the chart, followed by animated comedy hit Read more

From his casual charm to his cleft chin, George Clooney has frequently drawn comparisons to an actor of another age: Cary Grant. With his third directorial effort, the Oscar winner pays homage to the style of films that helped make Grant famous, such as BRINGING UP BABY and HIS GIRL FRIDAY. In 1925,...
