Here's a wonderful chunk of 20th Century-Fox tosh in the most glowing Oscar-winning Technicolor (cinematographer Leon Shamroy) you're ever likely to see. Sublimely beautiful Gene Tierney is Ellen, who drops overacting Vincent Price to go off with dull but handsome author Cornel Wilde, and lets her pretty foster sister Jeanne Crain and Wilde take the blame for murder. Splendid stuff, this is glorious melodrama that knows no bounds — cherish the sequence in which Tierney feverishly scatters ashes against the Maine horizon.
No-holds-barred melodrama of the old school; what seemed lush production at the time now looks tatty.
What a classic!.....the film is one long flashback, and you can't wait to see what happened!
The main character is completely psychotic and self centered - those close to her know this, but can't admit the unimaginable to themselves. Don't want to spoil it for you, but this woman will stop at nothing to get her way!!!!
Anyone who's read a book called 'The Bad seed' will see similarities in this film (psychologically that is) -it's like little Rhoda (psycho child and 'Bad Seed' of the title) all grown up - cue the screeching violins!!!
This is a contradiction in terms: a beautifully photographed film noir in colour set in the open spaces of America rather than its mean streets. Gene Tierney plays Ellen, a woman possessed with an obsessive love for her husband, Cornel Wilde, who resembles her dead father. She is prepared to kill anyone who stands in the way of her obsession. What appears to begin as a gentle romance film becomes a powerful Greek tragedy as Tierney's behavior becomes increasingly disturbing.
