This is a contradiction in terms: a beautifully photographed film noir in colour set in the open spaces of America rather than its mean streets. Gene Tierney plays Ellen, a woman possessed with an obsessive love for her husband, Cornel Wilde, who resembles her dead father. She is prepared to kill anyone who stands in the way of her obsession. What appears to begin as a gentle romance film becomes a powerful Greek tragedy as Tierney's behavior becomes increasingly disturbing.

Wonderfully eccentric in parts - especially Vincent Price in the court room. Yet at the same time the twisted thoughts of a person who is obsessively possessive can follow this extreme pattern in a relationship, though of course the plot does go for whole hog with events!

I have to agree with the comments about Gene Tierney's wardrobe for this film. She wears some amazingly glamourous items complete with perfect hair and make up.

If this film were remade we would see shapeless t- shirts, jogging bottoms and trainers in most of the outdoor scenes which would take so much from the atmosphere and visual charm. Very enjoyable and of it's time!

It's like one of those based on a true story movies where a spolit, possessive girl tries to get her own back on whoever upsets her. Not really much thrills but the photography glows.

Fantastic '40s Noir that is as dark in content as it is Technicolour bright and colourful. Forget bunny boiling, how about allowing your new husbands disabled young brother to drown then throwing yourself down the stairs to kill your unborn child just because you just LOVE your man so much and want him all to yourself. Oh and your man resembles your fathe, just to get a bit of fashionable Freud in there and keep up with Hitchcok and Lang. Tierney is fab in this in a rare case of her being the obsessed rather than people obsessing over her (Preminger's Laura etc). Her slightly icy aloofness here hides a truly dangerous, tortured mind. Men beware!

Jealousy is one of the seven deadly sins. Gene Tierney gives a powerful performance as the beautiful self-centered Ellen whose jealousy alienates everyone around her. Cornel Wilde plays her husband who gets more than he bargained for when he marries Ellen and becomes overwhelmed by his wife's obsessive love and jealousy. This is a good film with great performances from all the cast especially Tierney as the chilling Ellen. Jealousy is a dangerous emotion and this film skilfully portrays the devastating and destructive effect that is has upon people.

The original 'bunny boiler' film, Leave Her to Heaven features the ravishing Gene Tierney playing a pathologically jealous wife driven to deceit and devastation. Her wardrobe (especially the outfit that made her resemble a 16th century samurai) is as breathtaking as the visual splendors on display. The lavish Technicolour and cinematography are exquisite, demanding the film be seen on a big screen, while the tranquil, lakeside locations contrast with the wickedness taking place. The film itself isn't that absorbing: a contrived melodrama full of simplistic psychology which climaxes with a highly implausible courtroom sequence.
