Legally Blonde

In the sharply funny LEGALLY BLONDE, Reese Witherspoon gives a glittering performance as Elle Woods, the natural blonde sorority queen who enrolls at Harvard Law School. When she first appears, Elle seems to be no more than the bright cousin of CLUELESS's Alicia Silverstone. Expecting her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis) to propose, she is mortified when instead he says he needs somebody serious as his wife. When Elle discovers Warner's brother is engaged to a law student, she decides to go to Harvard. She studies for the LSATs, submits a video essay--in which she appears in a sequined bikini--and, miraculously, is accepted. At first, Elle is rebuked by Professor Stromwell (Holland Taylor) and is the target of snide comments from other students. But, gradually, it becomes clear that Elle is no fish out of water--she is smarter, more driven, and more likely to survive in the rarefied Harvard atmosphere than anyone else.
Witherspoon gets fine support from Selma Blair as Warner's new fiancee, Jennifer Coolidge as a beautician, Victor Garber as an unscrupulous professor, Ali Larter as a client from Elle's sorority, Holland Taylor, and Luke Wilson as a lawyer fascinated by Elle's unconventional approach. The smart, witty script is by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith. The first-time director is 28-year-old Australian Robert Luketic.

Reese Witherspoon tries — and generally succeeds — to be a grown-up version of Alicia Silverstone's character from Clueless in this entertaining comedy. She plays Elle, a sorority queen who's dumped by her rich boyfriend (Matthew Davis) before he goes to Harvard Law School, as he thinks she's not smart enough to be his wife. The vivacious Valley Girl decides to follow him there to prove him wrong and get him back. It's all desperately silly (Elle gets into Harvard by sending a video of herself in a bikini lounging by a pool), but the sight of a pink-clad Elle tottering on stilettos through Harvard's revered halls is hilarious, and Witherspoon is perfect as the girl whose specialist subjects are Cosmopolitan and manicures. There's fine support, too, from Luke Wilson, Selma Blair (as Davis's bitchy new girlfriend) and Jennifer Coolidge.

A chick flick with attitude and pink, very pink...

There is just enough of a plot in this to keep everybody interested, though the basic premise (that an interest in girly things can be advantageous in a man's world) is rather laboured. And the way that our hero wins her first big court case is laughable. But maybe that's the point. Rent this DVD and you're not getting Scorcese or even Jane Campion, but just some amusing eye-candy to go with the pizza. And there's nothing wrong with that. Oh, and Reece Witherspoon is realy rather good, and has excelent comic timing.

    Like eating candyfloss

This movie is everything I like about the colour pink - it'd bright, snappy, zany, utterly shallow but full of a gloriously demented energy.

    Another black eye for Witherspoon

    • 14 Aug 2009

Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon has proved she is a clumsy catcher - she has been spotted sporting another black eye just weeks after she recovered from a similar baseball-related injury. The Legally Blonde star has been filming baseball picture How Do You Know in Washington, DC and took up softball as part of her training. But it wasn't long before the 33 year old suffered her first injury after she was hit in the face during a game last month (Jul09). And now Witherspoon has sparked... Read more
