Reasonable - but she deserves better and more
By noirpanther (218 reviews) from London , 13 Feb 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
This is probably the most comprehensive overview of the truly 'incomparable' Lena Horne. Better than Dianna Ross, Beyonce, Halle Berry, Janet Jackson and many others in all the artistic areas, Lena was unfortunate to be performing during a period when America's racism severely restricted opportunities for black entertainers.
Tlhis DVD mentions that racism and her fights against it, while incuding snippets of Lena's wonderful recorded performances (missing out on the only major acting part she was allowed, in 'Death of A Gunfighter').
The film quality deserves better attention, as modern clean-up techniques enable much better picture and sound presentation than is available here.
Still, Lena did manage to both shine, fight the bigotry and lead the way for African/American artists who followed in her wake. Well worth seeing, in social history, education and entertainment terms!- Was this review helpful to you?
