Mais oui, main sewer

Enjoyable heist movie set in the sewers of Paris. It contains all the more obvious cliches of the genre with a group of recognisable criminal stereotypes coming together to carry out the crime of the century. The whole plot hinges on tunnelling into a vault from the sewers and the French police being stupid; both of which are credible scenarios in this film. It tries to give a sense of nobility to some of the robbers - stealing for higher motives - but it all looks a bit kitsch in that rather naff 70s way. I always think the French are at their worst in films when they try to imitate Americans and there is some of that in this film but not enough to ruin some of its pleasures.
