    [Highly rated reviewer]

In suspect this was released largely on the back of Eureka's release of Fantastic Planet. With the exception of those interested in Laloux/animation for animations sake I suspect this for most would/will prove a disappointment/quickly forgotten experience. The plot whilst not totally without merit is bordering on amateur/school compositionish.. feels distinctly arbitrary, incoherent..just a chain of set pieces I wanted to animate slung together at times. There is a certain clash of animation style here - for more static landscape shots there is high definition 'art-animation' a la Fantastic Planet - however, for the people and creature stuff it is very typical 70s cartoon style.. and some times not very good at that. For a select group of 'cult' fans only !

  • Great stuff!

I doubt if I would have thrived in real life in the company of most of the starring characters in this sci-fi animation, whether goodies or baddies. I was uneasy about so many well-formed bods. In terms of healthy values about life and humanity that seemed just a bit iffy. But even in that respect there were redeeming features and the film was great entertainment, with some smashing music too.

Anyone who has seen 'La Planete sauvage' will instantly wish to check out everything else that exists by Rene Laloux (and there are only seven films in total, including shorts), but this, the second of his features, must be accounted something of a disappointment. The film skimps on context and characterisation, and the narrative only comes alive in the second half, with the detour to the planet dominated by the unifying consciousness, and then the climactic, explanatory meeting with the Time Masters of the title. The rest is a rather simple-minded, deep-space rescue mission, made even less interesting by the fact that the picture cannot make up its mind whether it's for kids or adults. In amongst it all there are sequences of Laloux's genius (Jaffar and the Princess falling in love while swimming, for instance), but, as the other reviewer on this page has said, you'll probably have to be a fan to appreciate them.

And, unlike their other Laloux discs, Eureka haven't even seen fit to put any extras on this one.
