Not for fans of the musical
By a customer from Suffolk, England , 16 Apr 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Being a huge fan of the West End musical that's still selling out after 20 years, I have to say I was slightly disappointed with this film. I haven't read the book so I'm not sure how true to that the film is, but the changes I noticed were irritating (the exclusion of the character Eponine is criminal) and I felt the end was a total cop-out. Still, I did enjoy the film and there were some fantastic performances from Uma Thurman, Geoffrey Rush and Liam Neeson. The film is much darker and grittier than the musical, making it I suppose much more realistic to the era. If you're expecting a film of the musical, you'll be disappointed but as a re-telling of the story, it's worth a look.- Was this review helpful to you?

The all-acting, non-singing, non-dancing version!
By Jasi (5 reviews) , 28 Feb 2013I've seen the West End musical version - too heavy and didn't quite get into it! Had a go at the book - too heavy and couldn't quite get into it! After watching this, it all makes sense. Even though it's over 2 hours long, it still feels like it's had bits cut out but don't let that put you off. Forgetting everything that came before and after it, it is still a good story and worth a watch. All roles are played out brilliantly and with emotion (not gut-wrenching like the musical!) and can be enjoyed by peoples of all ages. A good Sunday night movie!- Was this review helpful to you?

'STAR' NAMES FAIL TO RAISE CHEER!
By nORMObAZZA (1247 reviews) , 20 Feb 2013Despite lasting two hours, the story felt like it was rushed along and I didn't develop any empathy for the central characters. NEESON is rather robotic, and wears an unconvincing wig. THURMAN comes and goes without making any impression at all. RUSH does his best with what he's given but can't do it all on his own.- Was this review helpful to you?

What comes first? the book or the musical?
By leftywright (1 review) , 02 Jan 2013When will people understand the order of things - first comes the book, then the film and then finally the twentieth century craze for turning everything into a musical. For this who found the film 'not like the musical', grow up and learn to read. A great film!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Still waiting for a film version worthy of the story of Les Mis
By Umsh (13 reviews) from xxx , 09 Jun 2011I've read the book. Honestly -- this film stays true to the book and tells the story. But that's about all. I felt the film was dry of the real passion and raw emotion that is behind the characters and the story in the book.
I think there have been a few attempts at a good film version of Les Miserables. Even if you leave aside any lofty expectations based on the musical, this film simply comes up short.- Was this review helpful to you?
