Berlioz 5 hour epic of the Trojan war and its aftermath. Excellently sung staged and recorded and uses period instruments. I preferred this to the also good Salzburg Festival version. If you are not sure whether you like Berlioz opera, try the Damnation of Faust first in the Salzburg Festival version. Recommended.
This is by far the best version of Les Troyens which I have seen. John Elliot Gardiner always produces wonderful music and 'his' sets, costumes and filming are magnificent (cf Cosi fan Tutte at Theatre du Chatelet) This version is visually stunning (except for the appearance of a few auto-rifles: a bit of pretentious token modernism) The music, to my un-schooled ears, is not oviously Berlozian although there are recognizable 'trumpet' chords. The singing is wonderful and clear (but then, there are better opera critics than I) Definitely worth buying as part of a treasured collection. Very watchable and engaging.
