Two working class girls Teresa and Elaine (Clarke and Pigg) attempt to escape the dreariness of their grimy industrial Liverpool life at the factory by frequenting the local disco in search of sex, adventure and romance. They meet a pair of Russian sailors, Sergei and Peter (Firth and Molina) and true love blossoms for Elaine, but the problem is Peter must return home to Russia and she is determined to follow him. She writes a letter to the Soviet leader Brezhnev, describing her plight, and is amazed to receive a reply! Will she leave her 1980s industrial hell and follow her heart to an uncertain life in uncertain Russia

Vivid it is, but also raucous and seedy until true love enters as a redeeming factor. The critics loved it, thinking it about unemployment and urban decline; it certainly paints a low picture of Liverpool.

I love this film. It's a bit dated now but a really heart warming story. Helps you remember what falling in love felt like!
