    [Highly rated reviewer]

This film is over two hours long, but passed by in what seemed like ten minutes,

A truly amazing and deeply moving cinema experience not to be missed by anyone with just the slightest interest in events from ww2.

You feel like you are there on the island suffering every emotion and fear with the brilliant cast of actors,

How this film missed out on a Oscar to the most over rated film of all time The Departed will remain a mystery to me.

  • Excellent - Japanese point of view (subtitles)

I had watched flags of our Father which was very good, so felt I had to watch this to see the other point of view, even though my view of Japanese wasn't favourable, as my uncle spent years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, but never spoke of it. So I wasn't prepared to feel sorry for them, this was an emotional film & made me understand the Japanese were not all bad. The story is based around two young friends who watched their comrades die for an island which had to be kept at all costs. The letters were written by one of the young friends to his wife & young baby during his stay on the island. Where the generals worked them hard digging tunnels in preparation of the American invasion.

  • A Great Anti-war War Film

    Rated - 5.0 stars

This was a very moving film told from the Japanese side, whose army are defending an island in a hopeless cause. Two young soldiers who have been recruited and are unconvinced of the purpose of the war are caught up in this futile operation but find humanity and understanding from high ranking Japanese officers while others are blindly fanatic in their patriotic fervour. The filming is subdued in colour which gives a faded historical texture and the whole, despite the hell-on-earth situation created by men themselves, is pervaded by occasions of real human compassion and understanding.

Fantastic and original. Shows the war in the Pacific from the Japanese perspective tactfully and sensitively. Well directed and some great shots.

  • Best Film of all time

Best film I've ever seen! so emotionally in depth and truly compelling! As a WW2 fanatic, the war in the pacific interests me most and Letters from Iwo Jima has stood up as a truly factual and precise film! It's nice to see the side of the story from the losers side apposed to a boring american film where the good guys always win and everyones happy blah blah blah! the Japs gave 'em hell and the americans won but suffered! Great film and a must see. anyone who doesn't like it is an idiot who likes films with shiny things and flashing explosions
