Redemption

This film is one of those films one hasn't heard of before, and finds by accident, but is very glad to have done so.
Manual Jordan (Billy Bob Thornton) after 21 years in prison for murdering a young man returns to the town of his crime. There, by chance, he meets a pastor (Morgan Freeman) who runs a community youth centre in a run-down part of town. The pastor gives him a room and a job, so by night he works with the pastor. By day he watches and follows the sister (Holly Hunter) of the man he murdered, in the hope he can some how make amends for his crime. Kirsten Dunst is a rich kid throwing her life away, on drink and drugs, in the nightclub opposite the youth centre.
The four main actors play their parts well and are all interesting (in this film as always I think) to watch, especially Billy Bob Thornton.
It is a 'small' film with a fairly simple and predictable plot, but I found it completely captivating and enjoyable. It basically explores the theme of redemption through the different characters. It has a basic message that life is messy and complicated but people can still do good things. It has quite a satisfying ending without being overly sentimental.
I definitely recommend this film, as its well worth the time watching it.- Was this review helpful to you?

(48)A weak story redeemed by an outstanding cast performance
By Corona (6 reviews) from London , 07 Feb 2010I can understand why so many reviewers of Levity find it 'slow', 'plodding' or even 'boring'. On the face of it, Levity has a simple and not overly original storyline and events in the film move at a slow pace. There is definitely not much to satisfy a serious film lover in the screenplay.
However, I really enjoyed the film and that was mostly because the four lead actors are superb and intriguing in their own ways. Billy Bob plays the role of the broken and penitent man convincingly. Whilst you never fully warm to him you can really empathise with his pathetic attempts to do right. Morgan Freeman and Holly Hunter both play flawed characters in their own way and both give a solid performance supporting Billy Bob. The surprise for me in this film was Kirsten Dunst whose character adds a different dimension to the film with her lost and damaged 'rich kid' losing control over her life. It is an understated performance that really adds to the bleak and dark nature of the film.
All in all, not a cinematic masterpiece but I enjoyed it nonetheless.- Was this review helpful to you?

Individual performances were good but the movie itself seemed to lack something. A fair story and worth a watch on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon.- Was this review helpful to you?

Quite a Find!
By LarryK (3 reviews) from Oldham , 08 Mar 2008This film may be too deep for most. Although a little slow moving, this is part of the beauty of the film, as with most meaningful films. This gives you time to appreciate the four main actor's performances, most notably Billy Bob Thornton. Although containing a simple main plot, you find a wonderfully subtle subplot and twists as the story unfolds.

Trapped Wind

Good Film

A slow moving film that makes you think about how a convicted murderer overcomes his guilt – Thornton and Hunter are excellent however this film is not for everyone.- Was this review helpful to you?
