Not entirely convincing
By a customer from Bradford, England , 09 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Chosen because it was written by Jimmy McGovern (Cracker/Hillsborough) it lived up to pre-viewing expectations that 'if it's not that good, it'll be better than most.' And that's how it was i'm afraid - hovering in suspension between, not bad and very good. McGovern tackles issues where he's been before, taking a swipe at the catholic church amongst other things, and it's done quite well. The acting is fine on the whole, some, such as Liam are excellent.
The trouble is that if you've watched Cracker before, you've seen most of this in one way or another.
The ending lacks the power that it should because, for a film that is dealing with hard-hitting issues, it gets a bit too ridiculous and relies too much on coincidences.- Was this review helpful to you?

(9)Your Soul Will Burn In Hell For Eternity !!!
By a customer , 28 Jul 2011Came across this film by accident and as I knew a lot of the areas where it was filmed, decided to give it a go.
Jimmy McGovern stories are always good and this one doesn't disappoint either.
It is a well written and well acted film set in the 1930's depression.
Centred on the work lives / lack of work lives of the characters and of course, the extremely strict Catholic Schooling of little seven year old Liam.
I must say, this part really took me back to my own Catholic upbringing !!!
The ending was a little bit strange and you have to use your imagination as to what it means.
I understood though, after giving it a few minutes thought.- Was this review helpful to you?

"Good" - for the right reason.
By Lelboy (269 reviews) from East London , 16 Apr 2011Tender and thought-provoking, this is a DVD not to be missed. People today have no idea what it was really like to 'exist' all that time ago.- Was this review helpful to you?

Well worth watching
By a customer from Cornwall , 14 Mar 2006Very real and heart rending story of a small boy growing up in a Catholic dominated home in poverty stricken Liverpool in the 1930s...

McGovern the Great
By Christine from Docklands , 24 Jan 2006A thought-provoking, beautifully crafted script. A skillful evocation of a family's fall on hard times. The political impact it has on the father. The Catholic indoctrination of the youngest - the eponymous Liam - is particularly well told.
Initially, the final scene felt unsatisfying. However, it's open-endedness has made me think about it - probably more than if I had been given a neat and tidy outcome. Clever.- Was this review helpful to you?
