Lie To Me - Season 1

From writer Samuel Baum ("The Evidence") and the executive producers of 24 and "Arrested Development" comes Lie To Me, a compelling new drama series inspired by the scientific discoveries of Dr. Paul Ekman, a real-life specialist who can read clues embedded in the human face, body and voice to expose both the truth and lies in criminal investigations.

Lightman heads a team of experts at The Lightman Group who assist federal law enforcement, government agencies and local police with their most difficult cases. Dr. Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams, "The Practice") is a gifted psychologist and Lightman's professional partner who brings balance to the partnership by looking at the bigger picture while Lightman focuses on the details. He needs her guidance and insight into human behavior, whether he knows it or not. Eli Loker (Brendan Hines, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) is Lightman's lead researcher, who is so uncomfortable with the human tendency to lie that he's decided to practice what he calls "radical honesty." He says everything on his mind at all times and often pays the price. Ria Torres (Monica Raymund, "Law and Order: SVU") is the newest member of the agency, and one of the few "naturals" in the field of deception detection. She has a raw, untrained ability to read people that makes her a force to be reckoned with.

    Lie To Me

Although I haven't yet seen the DVD of this show, I have been following it closely on Sky. As a Tim Roth fan there was no way I was going to miss this show, but I was prepared to be disappointed with another CSI rip off... But I was very pleasantly surprised.

Although this show does occasionally seem formulaic (Each member of the team has their strengths and weaknesses that compliment each other a little too perfectly, and the new girl is 'sassy' and rocks the boat) overall, this is an excellent indroductory season to what looks to be a fantastic series, which is both technical and human.

One of the interesting things about this show is that it relates the facial expressions of the characters to stars and celebrities in the real world, so we're almost seeing these old events in a new light. I also like that the show doesn't get to technical and 'jargon-y', but rather points things out in an original, interesting and most of all, understandable manner.

This is a great series for any police drama fan, but it's also a good show for anyone interested in human nature and how we show ourselves to the world.

Love it, and that's the truth

There must be someone in Hollywood looking at all the popular shows and seeing how they can rewrite them to make another hit show. Well whoever thought of this one should get a pay rise.

Stealing the premise of House (British actor plays irascible genius with sexy supporting cast to solve a mystery that baffles everyone else) I think it surpasses the original.

Tim Roth is wonderfully idiosyncratic as a human lie detector and due to the specialist nature of his work (The study of human micro expressions) you can actually see why the visiting guest actors can't solve the mystery without him, unlike many other series which leave you feeling like everyone else in the world must be completely stupid.

At times the story can be predictable, even corny and I can usually guess the plot of the support story of the episode, but never less than fully engaging. The cast come across as fully developed characters from episode 1 and enjoy a wonderful chemistry.

This has gone straight the top of my favourite TV series, long may it reign.
