Written and directed by Todd Solondz, this quirky comedy-drama is pretty darn depressing.

LIFE DURING WARTIME
By Paulus (15 reviews) from Sussex , 01 Aug 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
Certainly Todd Solondz's best film since HAPPINESS and, like that movie, both disturbing and very funny. The device of casting new actors is a double-edged sword as it takes a time to work out who the characters are and there is a sense of trying to recapture old glories by revisiting his greatest work after the lacklustre PALINDROMES, but it's nevertheless an intense and witty film with great performances.- Was this review helpful to you?

(16)'Happiness' Part 2
By a customer , 18 Jan 2013This sequel to the brilliant 'Happiness' doesn't quite reach the same level of genius, but it's still a good film, picking up the same characters and exploring the theme of forgiveness through a series of darkly humorous vignettes. The recasting of practically all the main characters takes a little getting used to, and it falls into the usual sequel trap of being 'more of the same, only not quite so good as the original', but if you loved 'Happiness' you will find plenty to enjoy here. It does feel a little incomplete though, so I'm hoping a third film will wrap everything up with these characters at some point in the future.- Was this review helpful to you?

What for ?
By a customer from Richmond,Surrey,UK , 05 Jan 2011First we found it difficult to wade through what seemed like hours of establishing who the characters were. From then on, we found the film uniformly depressing, and very hard to understand what the makers were trying to show or trying to prove. We had booked it because Janney and Hinds were in it, and both acted well, but to what purpose ? 'Quirky comedy' ?? We found nothing comic. Moralistic ? We found no message in it, other than that life can be miserable.- Was this review helpful to you?

Is there life after this
By ricoh (95 reviews) from Calne , 10 Dec 2010Dissapointing and very hard work to watch, but it had its moments. Overall though dissapointing and you haven't missed much if you haven't seen it. One to watch when theres nothing else available.- Was this review helpful to you?

How can anyone describe this as comedy?
By a customer from Crediton , 01 Nov 2010I must be missing the point but this is possibly the worst film I have ever seen. Incomprehensible! I could perhaps have done with subtitles to interpret the whining [American] dialogue- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't waste your time
By a customer from Northern Ireland , 28 Oct 2010Can't fully review this film as I only endured approx 30 minutes of it and couldn't suffer any more. Maybe I should have watched the first movie? I doubt this would have made a difference. Disappointed as I like the actors - particularly Ciaran Hinds - shame to see him in such rubbish.- Was this review helpful to you?
