Life Or Something Like It

An ambitious TV anchorwoman, Lanie Kerrigan (Angelina Jolie), decides to change her destiny when a homeless man tells her she'll die within a week. Lanie is perfect: the famous host of a popular TV show, engaged to Seattle Mariners star Cal (Christian Kane), and adorned in a perfect wardrobe enhanced by her trademark Marilyn Monroe-inspired blonde buffont. To top it all off, her boss recommends her for her dream job, a network position in New York City. In order to increase her chances, he sends her to do field work with the renowned, but difficult, cameraman Pete (Edward Burns). On an assignment, Prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub), tells Lanie three predictions: that the Seattle Seahawks will beat the Denver Broncos 19-13, that it will hail the following day, and that she'll be dead by next Thursday. When the first two predictions come true, Lanie reevaluates her life and realizes she's missing out on the smaller things because of her ambition. Jolie is sexy, adorable, and whimsical in her first comedic role. The sizzling banter between Burns and Jolie recalls Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY. LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT is a lovely departure for director Steven Herek (ROCK STAR, BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE).

This is not good, absolutely nothing like it, in fact. Finally washing up on these shores almost a year after its US release, this would-be romantic comedy serves as further evidence of Angelina Jolie's post-Oscar career slide. Here she plays Lanie Kerrigan, a has-it-all Seattle TV reporter (great job, great boyfriend, great big hair) who is informed by a tramp known as Prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub) that she has a week to live. Cue much re-evaluating of life goals and cod-philosophical musings about “living every day as if it were your last”. For Lanie, that includes falling into bed with her hitherto loathed cameraman (Edward Burns) — no bad thing if the leads generated any chemistry at all. Sadly, Jolie gives Lanie such a brittle, vain and shallow edge that it's impossible to care.

Deeply silly romantic comedy, a genre for which its stars have little talent, but no actor or director could have made this particular script sound good.

quirky romantic comedy

Not your typical girlie romantic comedy. There were some quite sad bits with family relationships not being totally rosey, and the knowledge that she was going to die in a weeks time constantly hanging over her head. Overall a very watchable tale with good chemistry from the leading cast members.

Oh Angie

This film is actually very sexist, the premise being that women are only happy if they get married and have kids. I'm amazed Jolie agreed to be in this.
