LILACS IN THE SPRING
By slarty (2 reviews) from Dundee , 06 Jun 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
The first of two films Flynn made with Anna Neagle and her producer/husband Herbert Wilcox .Filmed in Black and white with the flashback sequences shot in colour. Although He was coming shortly to the end of a dynamic and volatile career, and the wear and tear of such a life were begining to show,Flynn still had not lost that special something in front of the cameras that made him so irresistable to watch.Anna Neagle (who recreates cameos of herself in two of her most famous roles as Nell Gwynn and Queen Victoria), plays the double role of mother and daughter, both of whom become stage stars.Errol Flynn plays the role of Beau Beaumont the Husband/Father who begins as a hoofer in English Music hall and graduates to Hollywood. The plot is rather trite, but the two stars carry it off with style and it is worth seeing for them alone.David Farrar provides stolid support and the musical comedy numbers from the various periods are all well staged. It is quite a surprise(and not unpleasant) to see Errol Flynn do a soft shoe song and dance routine.
The negative part of this review is to report that the DVD(issued by ITV)is one of the worst, shoddiest DVD´s that I have ever seen.
The print of the film they have used is obviously from the `50s,or certainly seems to be - the print is so battered, with serious frame damage resulting in jumps every so often - the begining is marred by vertical lines on the left of the screen(for almost 5 minutes) and the colour scenes are really washed out, that it beggars belief that a company using the name ITV could issue this DVD under their logo. They should be ashamed of themselves. It is sadly not the only example issued by this company in this kind of condition.
It is not fair to dupe the public into buying DVDs produced in this type of quality.
I am so grateful to LOVEFILM that it was possible to rent and see this movie rather than buy it.
I hope that this film will receive a better release than this in the future, but I doubt it.
