Although this film is well acted and directed, I feel it was over-ambitious in having five main characters. I feel it would have been far more involving if it could have concentrated on fewer characters and their dilemmas, and with some of their stories the viewer is left wanting far more.
Still if a view of the life of the very poor in Brazil is what you are after, without the unremitting violence of 'City of God', get this film. If you want to check out this director's films, then I would suggest that 'Behind the Sun' or 'Motorcycle Diaries' are better choices.
A realistic portrayal of Brazilian ghetto life framed around football which delves into the conflict between ambition and reality. Too dark for me in places and lacking in optimism.
